    A gaseous and dusty atmosphere develops around cometary nuclei when they approach the Sun and are heated and then abates during the outward motion in the orbit. This atmosphere, or coma, consists of evaporated molecules and their daughter products (atoms, radicals, ions), and grains that have been entrained by the sublimated gases.
